About a half hour past four in the morning on Wednesday, Syracuse firefighters received the call for a small structure fire. Within minutes, the team of firefighters was able to extinguish the blaze. However, the flames were not put out in time to save the lives of 32-year-old Lisa Epolito and her two young children, 9-year-old Joseph Sgroi and 6-year-old Julia Sgroi.

According to reports, the boyfriend of the mother, Sean Chetney claims to have been sleeping on the couch while Lisa Epolito was preparing a meal in the kitchen of their home. He woke up when he heard Lisa screaming from the other room for him to get out of the house. 30-year-old Sean Chetney and Lisa Epolito’s 11-year-old daughter were able to successfully escape the burning house.

Although the exact cause of the fire is not known at this time, investigators of the fire have determined that the flames did begin in the kitchen area of the home. Information on the status of smoke detectors in the house was not presently available.

Syracuse firefights say that Lisa Epolito was found in the living room of the house. Both of the children were found in the hallway upstairs. Joseph Sgroi died early that morning at an area hospital. Lisa Epolito and Julia Sgroi died hours later.
